That taunt comes very badly from Members of a party which, by its very name, was a coalition party; which even altered its name at a Certain Crisis because it was a coalition party, and which then proceeded deliberately to carry legislation to which the majority of its own Members had been opposed—legislation which they abhorred and repudiated—merely for the purpose of establishing themselves as a coalition.

This is a temporary measure to deal with a Certain Crisis which has arisen in certain trades, and now we find it is not a temporary measure at all, but part of another scheme which will be amplified and enlarged later on when the Government, which is in office after the War, has had the opportunity to consider what they should do.

Members are, however, generally agreed on one thing, and that is that if a Certain Crisis or deadlock arises there is danger at that point in appointing men who are not likely to receive thanks from one side or the other.

During September and October, owing to a Certain Crisis or emergency that arose, exceptional pressure was put upon our staff, and I want to say that they responded wholeheartedly to the request which my right hon.
