The issue of countries of origin and the right of consumers to know where goods, foods and materials emanate from is particularly important at present, as we battle with the Ongoing Horsemeat Crisis.

Although I commend the industry for working alongside UK, Irish and EU agencies to strengthen the testing and tracking of food products in response to the Horsemeat Crisis, I cannot yet commend the UK Government, whose response to the crisis was hampered by structural problems of their own making.

When the Horsemeat Crisis broke, it is undoubtedly true - I have to say this, and I have said it consistently - that there was a delay in Whitehall among Ministers.

Can the Minister assure the House that his Department is doing everything it can to have clear labelling on all packaging, particularly after the Horsemeat Crisis and various other issues, so that we can have country of origin and even region of origin labelling on our packaging?
