In the last three months of 1951 the Textile Crisis hit France, Holland, Belgium, and other textile producing countries in North-West Europe.

That is reflected in the Textile Crisis.

When the "Economic Survey of Europe in 1951" was issued by the United Nations it was sent out with a Press summary—it was issued on 3rd February, 1952—which said of this problem: " The Survey"— it was for 1951— "next discusses the textile raw materials situation in Western Europe, describing the sharp break in cotton and wool prices in March"— that is, March, 1951— "as the outstanding event of 1951 in the textile field and the harbinger of the Textile Crisis which developed later in the year".

I was saying that the Textile Crisis had been apparent in 1951.

The first recession which appeared in Ulster was in 1951–52, at the time of the Textile Crisis.

I am grateful for the opportunity to debate the question of the temporary employment subsidy with my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Employment, but once again it is a cause for regret on the part of my hon. Friends and myself that we come here to debate a Crisis in the Textile, clothing and footwear industries.

As the Leader of the House knows only too well, we have repeatedly asked him for a debate on the Textile Crisis and, while sympathy from him has been in abundance, no action has followed.

Goodness knows, these jobs are badly needed in an area which has been hit simultaneously by the largest steel closure in the Western industrial world and by the Textile Crisis and which has gone in a matter of months from a position well below the national average to not far short of double the national average level of unemployment.
