And perhaps I may be permitted to say, having occasion to refer to that noble Duke, and feeling that the revival of a matter which is only brought up perhaps to injure myself, is a revival cruel to him—that I am certain that all persons who are conversant with his conduct at that very Trying Crisis will never look back to any part of that conduct except with feelings of the warmest admiration.

and at the time of his return there he was on the best terms with all his colleagues, who have borne their testimony to his high character and to the manner in which he conducted himself in a most Trying Crisis.

It is very difficult, indeed, to be optimistic about a country like India, when one remembers not merely the conditions existing there at the present moment, but the conditions which have existed for many years in the most Trying Crisis through which India has been passing.
