I shall have more to say later, if there is time, about the position of the beef sector, which is one of the two areas of concern, but I point out now that it is in a much better state than it was the last time when we last had what was a real Crisis in the Beef Sector, and it is in a very much better state than it would have been had there not been the renegotiation by this Government, securing the variable premium which is essential for beef producers.
At the moment, the Minister has on his hands a genuine Crisis in the Beef Sector.
We voted against it on the ground that it seemed absurd to respond to a Crisis in the Beef Sector simply bythrowing yet more money into a system which has not been reformed.
I recognise that, as a result of the Crisis in the Beef Sector, many individuals and businesses have suffered greatly, and I have immense sympathy for them.
That is true not only in general but in the specific context of the Crisis in the Beef Sector.
I informed the Minister's office that I would concentrate today on the Crisis in the Beef Sector, especially in Wales - although I understand that the issue is also important in the other countries of Britain.
