I ask the House to consider the Present Farm Crisis in the much wider context of the world food problem.

I do not believe that the Present Farm Crisis is being taken seriously enough by the Government.

There is also the Farm Crisis fiasco of BSE, which has cost billions of pounds of taxpayers' money and has destroyed many rural incomes and rural communities.

The Rural Stress Network, which was founded in 1996 and now supports more than 30 regional and local initiatives, works closely with the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, the Farm Crisis network and the Samaritans.

On welfare of people, I commend the Farm Crisis Network, which has been doing a marvellous job.

I must make it clear that I recognise the work of existing charities and the value of individual donations to such organisations as RABI, the ARC Addington Fund, the Farm Crisis Network and the Archbishop's appeal.

In all probability, 60 turkey farms will go out of business and 50 suppliers and contractors will lose access to that market, all of which is on top of an Ongoing Farm Crisis across North Yorkshire.

I have also contacted the Farm Crisis Network, which records that farmers have been calling it regularly over the past three weeks, very distressed that late payment of their subsidies is causing cash-flow problems.

Will the hon. Gentleman examine the website of the Farm Crisis Network, which is another initiative taken by the Church of England?

I hope that Her Majesty's Government may be able to work with the Farm Crisis Network and other voluntary bodies, using the big society model once again-but, at the same time, providing the finance and incentives where these are needed-to rise to these challenges and to help to reduce the incidence of this disease.

I ask the Minister to recognise the work of the Farm Crisis Network, particularly the work of Suzie Wilkinson, the FCN's co-ordinator in Somerset, and the pastoral and practical support it gives to farmers working under stress.

I have huge admiration for the work of the Farm Crisis Network, which I have visited and met on a number of occasions.

Many farmers are still awaiting their single farm payments, not just for this year but for previous years, and the Farm Crisis Network is overburdened with requests for help.

I deal quite a lot with the Farm Crisis Network, which tries to relieve the stresses on the families concerned.

It is difficult to quantify or put a monetary value on that, but a report by the Farm Crisis Network describes the feelings of panic, stress and emotional devastation for farming families as they repeatedly have to send their cows to be slaughtered.

I understand that this issue excites strong emotions, but for those who feel strongly about it I point to the Farm Crisis Network report, which shows the devastating emotional cost to the farmers who lose their cattle.

The front page of the Farm Crisis Network's report brings home to anyone who has not experienced that what it feels like.

I ask the House to join me in paying tribute to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, the Farm Crisis Network and the Addington Fund for the work that they do to support our farmers.

One of my most special constituents is Mr Brian Warren, who runs a voluntary organisation called Farm Crisis Network, which provides pastoral support to farmers in distress.

As the Member of Parliament who has the Farm Crisis network organisation based in my constituency, I know that spending some time with members of that organisation and listening to the harrowing, heartfelt stories about farmers who are suffering might of itself change a few minds.

I am privileged to be a trustee of the Farming Community Network, formerly the Farm Crisis Network, and am well aware of how difficult it is for some struggling farmers to access advice through the statutory channels.
