Mr. Lewis asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will introduce legislation whereby all persons, who have as a result of petrol rationing suffered a financial loss, or loss of work, business or profits, due to the economic effects arising from the Suez Canal Crisis, will be able to make a claim for financial reimbursement from the Treasury.

Thus our capital position had been strengthened when the Suez Canal Crisis broke.

Mr. Lewis asked the Prime Minister if he will publish in HANSARD a copy of the letter sent by him to the President of the United States of America, on or about 6th September, giving Her Majesty's Government's views on the possible use of force to resolve the Suez Canal Crisis, and a copy of the President's reply to this communication.

(2) whether, without revealing the detailed contents of the correspondence which passed between him and the President of the United States of America, on or about 6th September, concerning the Suez Canal Crisis, he will explain why he suggested taking aggressive action then against Egypt; and the nature of the President's reply to this suggestion.

asked the Prime Minister (1) why he will not publish in HANSARD the correspondence which passed between him and the President of the United States of America, on or about 6th September, 1956, concerning the Suez Canal Crisis, and Britain's desire at that time to use force to resolve this difficulty; (2) whether, without revealing the detailed contents of the correspondence which passed between him and the President of the United States of America, on or about 6th September, concerning the Suez Canal crisis, he will explain why he suggested taking aggressive action then against Egypt; and the nature of the President's reply to this suggestion.

Can the Lord Privy Seal explain why he refuses to publish this correspondence here when it has been published in the American papers, where it has been said, and not denied by the Lord Privy Seal during Questions in the House, that on 6th September the Prime Minister wrote to the President of the United States threatening to use force against Egypt to resolve the Suez Canal Crisis, and that President Eisenhower replied stating that if that happened, Britain would have to "go it" alone?

Mr. Lewis asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what extent foreign and hard currency has been earned by this country as a result of petrol rationing and shortage of petrol arising from the Suez Canal Crisis by virtue of Her Majesty's Government restricting the use of petrol at home by rationing and taxation and thus enabling British oil refineries to refine and export petrol to countries overseas for foreign currency.

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will cause an investigation to be made into the articles, commodities and services which have risen in price since the Suez Canal Crisis, with a view to defining the extent to which these prices have been reduced to their pre-Suez crisis level; and whether he will take the necessary action, by the imposition of price control or other wise, to ensure that all of these prices are reduced to the prices pertaining in October, 1956, where it can be shown that these were increased due to the war in Suez.

Even at the time of the Suez Canal Crisis, most of those who were involved - and I was involved militarily - recognised in Colonel Nasser a formidable and reasonably just opponent.
