We have taken a dual approach to the downturn, which involves both tackling its causes - the International Banking Crisis and the lack of adequate lending - and dealing fairly with the consequences.

To conclude, in order to be as brief as possible-there is much else I could say-just as Tony Blair will be most remembered by history for deceiving the country as to the reasons for taking us to war in Iraq, so, as this PBR yet again demonstrates, the present Prime Minister will be remembered as the Chancellor and Prime Minister whose profligacy left Britain's economy the most vulnerable of all major economies when the International Banking Crisis hit us.

I do not blame this Government for the International Banking Crisis, though in retrospect the removal from the Bank of England of macro-prudential control over the financial sector did not help.

In the context of the International Banking Crisis, it was clear that one of the most traumatic problems for businesses of all types was securing lending or investment on a consistent basis.

Will my right hon. Friend take this opportunity to nail, once and for all, the lie perpetuated by many Labour Members that the International Banking Crisis is in some way completely responsible for the budget deficit, given that, in reality, the figures show that just £40 billion of the total £667 billion spent by Government last year went to prop up the banks?

Between June 2007 and January 2008 Northern Rock collapsed, the International Banking Crisis began and the global recession started.

The Government are doing all this while the world economy is still very fragile after the International Banking Crisis.

I do not think that I blamed the last Government for the International Banking Crisis; I blamed them for the dire state of the UK economy that we inherited in 2010 - quite reasonably, if I might say so.
